Debate Reflections on cultural change in Mexico and its cinema

Thursday 20 September, 19.30 hrs, De Balie

Moderator: Koen Kleijn (De Groene Amsterdammer)

Mexico has been subject to massive cultural change in the last century. Films shown in Cinemaztlán like Hamac Casiim about a Mexican Hard-Rock band that only plays traditional Seri songs and El Imperio de un Milagro on the commercialisation of the worshipping of the Virgin of Guadalupe clearly show these changes.

In the debate Dutch professor Dr. Michiel Baud will elaborate on the changes Mexico has been subject to. Award-winning director Elisa Miller and film-critic Carlos Bonfil will refer to influence of these cultural changes on the Mexican Cinema, along with their views on the stylistic and narrative developments of Mexican Cinema in the last 20 years. A perspective of these changes taking place at global level and in other "World cinema" will be addressed by the renowned Dutch film critic Hans Beerekamp (NRC Handelsblad).
